OpenAI Models

OpenAI's lineup since September 2026 is the GPT-6 family: Astra as the flagship, 6.1 Sol close to it at a fifth of the price, 6.1 Terra for computer use and writing, and Luna for high volume.

Current lineup

Model ID Released Price per 1M tokens, in / out Use it for
GPT-6 Astra gpt-6-astra 2026-09-03 $10 / $50 Complex reasoning and coding; OpenAI's suggested starting point
GPT-6.1 Sol gpt-6.1-sol 2026-09-29 $2 / $10 Near-Astra results at lower cost
GPT-6.1 Terra gpt-6.1-terra 2026-10-26 $1 / $5 Visual reasoning, precise computer use and natural writing
GPT-6 Luna gpt-6-luna 2026-09-22 $0.10 / $0.50 Focused, high-volume tasks

All four take text and images, hold 1.05M tokens of context and return up to 128K output tokens. GPT-6 Sol shipped with Luna on 2026-09-22 and was followed by 6.1 Sol a week later. Source: OpenAI models docs, checked 2026-11-03; Source: OpenAI API changelog, checked 2026-11-03

The tiers price-match Anthropic's: Astra matches Claude Fable 5.1, Sol matches Sonnet 5.5 and Luna matches Haiku 5.5.

Specialized models sit beside the family: GPT-5.6 Cyber for authorized security research, GPT-Rosalind for life sciences, GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst and Flare for images, and GPT-Live 1 and the GPT-Realtime models for voice. Source: OpenAI models docs, checked 2026-11-03

Before GPT-6

GPT-5.5 was the main coding model in many July 2026 setups, including the Hermes Mac Mini Agent OS plan. It retired from Codex for users signed in with ChatGPT on 2026-10-14. OpenAI tells Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users to choose GPT-6.1 Sol, and Free and Go users to choose GPT-6 Luna; configs pinned to gpt-5.5 must be changed by hand. GPT-5.5 is still served through the OpenAI API and in Codex sessions signed in with an API key. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol prompting guide asked for lighter prompts: the goal, the success criteria, the evidence required, when to stop and which actions need confirmation. In Codex

Codex runs the GPT-6 family. One early demo paired GPT-6 Astra in Codex with a 3D-generation MCP server to build a scene from one image. Source: X/@DeemosTech, 2026-09-10 Codex Harness (OpenAI) covers the harness.

Decisions API

OpenAI's Decisions API runs GPT-6 Luna on questions with fixed answers and returns choices, probabilities or scores instead of text. It went to beta on 2026-10-06 and general availability on 2026-10-22. Decision Models covers it with Jev and the other decision models.
